The proposed application site is located at the junction of Fort Hill & Fort Road, adjacent to the recently completed Turner Contemporary Gallery. It forms a signifi cant historical landmark within Margate and is noted on maps dating from 1821 and is thought to have been visited by JMW Turner. The building has been derelict over 20 years and was bought by the Thanet District Council through compulsory purchase in December 2010.
Since its purchase urgent work to the front wall of the building has been carried out preventing collapse of the iconic facade. It is currently supported by scaff olding and has been secured to prevent access.
