Pobble House wins RIBA Regional Award
We are pleased to announce that Pobble House has won a RIBA regional award at the prestigious ceremony last night. The nine Regional Award winners were drawn from a shortlist of 16 projects, from 42 entries.
Speaking today, James Robinson, RIBA Regional Director said: “There was a fantastically high standard of entry to the RIBA Awards this year and we are very lucky in the South East to have the local ambition and design talent to be able to complete buildings of this quality. From important civic and public buildings to private houses and the conservation of our valuable historic built environment – these Award-winning architects have demonstrated the value of good design as well as the transformative effect it can have on the places where we live”.
As quoted from RIBA:
"Attention to fine detailing is evident in the South East regional awards, from private homes to the WWF headquarters and renovated Chichester Theatre, from a whole house recycling project to acoustic shells on the Littlehampton beach. Click on the images to find out more"
"Set against the bleak wilderness of Dungeness and its nuclear power station, this modest set of volumes forms a unique family retreat. A limited palette of timber, cement board and Corten steel is combined deliberately and carefully to give the house a strong profile of three pitched roof cabins, with a side pod appearing to float lightly above the shingle. A larger block is linked to a smaller children's dormitory block, connected by a glass bridge, and includes a timber deck that wraps around the glazed elevation."
"Elegant details include the treatment of the windows cut into the external boarding and the simple way rainwater drains back into the shingle around the building perimeter. Internally, a dark blue dining room includes a ribbon window that perfectly frames the view out. There is a lot to admire in this small but perfectly-formed house."
"RIBA South East Regional Award winners will also be considered for the highly-coveted RIBA National Awards in recognition of their architectural excellence: these will be announced on 18 June. The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize for the best building of the year will be drawn from the RIBA National Award-winning buildings later in the year."
