'The Wine Sanctuary' at Chapel Down - Officially Open

Working with our client, Chapel Down - England's leading wine producer, and collaborating with world famous jewellery designer, Stephen Webster in the design of the bar, we have converted an existing barn building, to a new wine tasting facility ‘The Wine Sanctuary’. This sits within the beautiful vineyard setting of Chapel Down Winery in Tenterden, within the heart of the Kent Countryside. These panoramic views can be enjoyed from within the barn.

A key ambition for the scheme was to create an environment in which visitors can fully experience Chapel Downs process of fine wine making. This has been achieved by relocating the tasting experience from elsewhere on site into the heart of the vineyards, where the visitor can now be fully exposed and submerged into the natural surroundings of the vineyards. This has been directly achieved through the use of a south facing glazed corner façade looking over the vineyard.

The glazed façade which slides open onto a decked south facing terrace, allows the internal space to immediately connect with its appropriate surroundings. The design has also allowed the natural beauty of the immediate surroundings to be preserved and framed from within the new wine tasting barn.

Located centrally at the far end of the barn is the inspiring bar designed by Stephen Webster, which draws you through the space, creating a destination to sit and enjoy the sensual experience. The materials used within the bar design have been influenced by the soil buildup of the Chapel Down vineyards, this is composed of flint soil on a bed of chalk. It is the rich qualities found in these materials that help to create the unique flavors of Chapel Down’s wine and sparkling wine collections.

These materials have been translated into the bar design in the form of flint panels with lime chalk mortar coated in resin, reminiscent of a section through the surrounding soil. The bar top is made of copper with the words ‘Great Minds Drink Alike’ placed along the perimeter.

Centrally located within the barn is a winetasting table stretching the length of the space, the seating within the space has the ability to accommodate over fifty people. To the side of the central table is a complimentary cabinet to store and display Chapel Down’s wine and sparkling wine collections. Objects, images and awards showing Chapel Down’s history, are placed here to showcase their story. The cabinet also houses hidden display and sound technology for use during Chapel Down tours and events.

Last night we were thrilled to attend the official opening of ‘The Wine Sanctuary’ and sample a new collection of Single Vineyard wines from the Kit’s Coty estate. Alongside local MP, Damien Green, and Stephen Webster, Guy was invited by CEO, Frazer Thompson, to open the ceremony by the art of sabrage. The evening was a great success and we look forward to returning.
